Why it matters
Know which channels actually convert
What UTM parameters tell you
utm_source names where traffic comes from (google, newsletter, an AI search answer). utm_medium describes the channel type (cpc, email, referral). utm_campaign groups the effort (spring_launch, free_trial_q3). Together they turn a blur of "referral traffic" into named, comparable sources.
Where most teams go wrong
UTMs only help if the parameters are consistent. "google" on one link and "google-ads" on another splits your reports. Use the same source and medium values everywhere, and you'll get clean comparisons between channels.
The part UTMs don't solve
A UTM tells you where a visitor came from. It doesn't tell you what that visitor did — or whether they're close to buying. That's what visitor memory adds: the referral source becomes one signal inside a per-visitor profile of intent.
