    How to make your website LLM‑optimized

    ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude are now answering the questions your customers used to type into Google. Here's how to make sure your site is the one they cite.

    Search has a new first page — and it's inside an AI answer

    When someone asks an AI tool 'what is the best privacy analytics tool', they get a paragraph with a recommendation, not ten links. Your job is to be that recommendation.

    Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — also called LLM optimization — is the emerging discipline of making your content machine-readable in a way that gets it surfaced inside AI-generated answers. It's not a replacement for SEO. It's an additional layer that rewards structure, clarity, and factual depth over keyword density and backlink count.

    The mechanics differ from traditional search: AI tools build answers from training data, live web crawls, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) from search indexes. To appear in those answers, your content needs to be clear enough for a model to quote, structured enough for a crawler to parse, and authoritative enough to be trusted over competing sources.

    This guide covers the eight changes that have the most impact, roughly in order of effort vs. return.

    How AI tools decide

    Where AI answers come from

    Understanding the pipeline helps you know where to intervene:

    1. Training data

    Models like GPT-4 and Claude were trained on large web crawls. Content that existed before the training cutoff — and was well-structured at that time — has a head start. This is why Wikipedia, documentation sites, and clearly written blog posts appear disproportionately in AI answers.

    2. Live web crawl (Perplexity, Google AI Overviews)

    Several AI tools actively crawl the web at query time. Perplexity's crawler visits pages in real time. Google's AI Overviews pull from the same index as organic search. For these, your page needs to be fast, crawlable, and recently updated.

    3. RAG from search indexes

    Some AI products retrieve web pages at inference time using a search index as the retrieval layer. They search, pull the top results, read the HTML, and synthesize an answer. Here, Google ranking is still a prerequisite — but so is having answer-format text near the top of the page.

    The common factor across all three: clean, structured, factual content wins. Marketing copy, vague positioning, and wall-to-wall prose all lose.

    The checklist

    Eight changes that move the needle

    1. Define your entity in the first paragraph

    The first 100 words of your homepage and key landing pages should contain a clear, one-sentence definition of what you are. AI models extract entity definitions from opening text. Vague headlines like "The platform that grows your business" give models nothing to work with.

    Good: "Tradly Memory is a privacy-first behavioral analytics and customer memory platform for ecommerce teams and AI agents."

    That sentence can be quoted directly in an AI answer. A tagline cannot.

    2. Add FAQPage schema to every page

    FAQPage structured data is the single highest-ROI GEO change. Models trained on web data have learned to trust FAQ schema as an authoritative signal for Q&A pairs. Google also renders FAQ dropdowns in SERPs, which increases CTR and crawl frequency.

    Add 3–5 questions per page. Write the answers as complete, standalone sentences — not "Yes, click here" but "Yes, Tradly Memory is GDPR-compliant because it captures no personal data — no names, emails, or payment details."

    3. Structure headings as questions

    H2s and H3s that read as questions ("What does a growth agent do?", "How does behavioral analytics work?") are parsed by AI tools as Q&A pairs even without explicit schema. This is the lowest-effort structural change: rewrite your section headings from declarative ("Our features") to interrogative ("What can you track?").

    4. Use clean semantic HTML

    AI crawlers struggle with heavy JavaScript, lazy-loaded content, and content hidden behind tabs or accordions. Your key content — definitions, features, comparisons — should exist in plain HTML that renders without JS execution. Server-side rendering or static site generation (SSG) is the gold standard.

    Tradly Memory's own site uses vite-react-ssg to pre-render every page to static HTML at build time. Every blog post, compare page, and feature page is in the HTML before JavaScript runs — crawlable by any bot instantly.

    5. Optimize Core Web Vitals

    Page speed is a factor in how frequently crawlers revisit your pages. A slow LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) means crawlers may time out or deprioritize your content. Target LCP under 2.5 seconds on mobile. Compress images, split your JS bundle, and serve assets with long-term cache headers.

    6. Add Organization schema to your homepage

    Organization structured data tells models your name, URL, logo, and social profiles. This creates an entity graph entry — models use this to resolve references to your brand name across different documents. Without it, a model may not confidently connect "Tradly" mentioned in one article with "analytics.tradly.app" in another.

    Include sameAs links to your Twitter, LinkedIn, GitHub, and Crunchbase profiles. Each additional reference point strengthens the entity connection.

    7. Use canonical URLs consistently

    Duplicate content fragments AI models' understanding of your authority. If the same article exists at three URLs, the model may split its confidence across all three. Canonical tags concentrate all signals onto a single URL. Check that every page has a self-referencing canonical and that your sitemap lists only canonical URLs.

    8. Add freshness signals to your sitemap

    Include <lastmod> dates in your sitemap.xml. AI crawlers and search indexes use modification dates to prioritize recrawling. A sitemap with accurate lastmod dates tells Perplexity's and Google's crawlers which pages have changed since the last visit — reducing wasted crawl budget and ensuring updated content is indexed quickly.

    Writing for AI answers

    Answer-format content beats marketing copy

    The tone and structure of your writing matters as much as the technical setup.

    AI tools synthesize answers by extracting the most relevant passage from a source and presenting it with attribution. The passages they choose share a pattern: they lead with the answer, then explain.

    Compare these two opening sentences for a page about cookie-free analytics:

    Marketing copy: "We believe privacy is a fundamental right — that's why we built an analytics platform that doesn't use cookies."

    Answer format: "Cookie-free analytics tracks visitor behavior using fingerprinting or server-side methods instead of browser cookies, making it exempt from cookie consent requirements."

    The second can be quoted directly in an AI answer to "what is cookie-free analytics". The first cannot. Rewrite your first paragraph on every important page to follow the answer-first pattern.

    Internal linking amplifies crawlability

    AI crawlers follow links the same way Googlebot does. A dense internal link graph means your full content corpus gets indexed, not just your homepage. Every blog post should link to at least three related pages. Every compare page should link to the corresponding feature page and two blog posts. The footer link grid is particularly valuable — it ensures every page on the site is reachable within two clicks from any starting point.

    How to know if GEO is working

    GEO success is harder to measure than SEO — there is no single rank tracker. The proxies worth monitoring:

    Brand mentions in AI tools

    Search your brand name and key product terms in Perplexity, ChatGPT (web browse mode), and Google AI Overviews monthly. Track whether you appear in answers, whether you're cited as a source, and which questions trigger your appearance. Screenshot and date these — they're your baseline.

    Referral traffic from AI tools

    Perplexity, You.com, and similar tools send referral traffic when users click through. Watch for new referral sources in your analytics under domains like perplexity.ai, you.com, and chat.openai.com. Growth here correlates with GEO traction.

    Search Console impressions for question queries

    Queries starting with "what is", "how to", "best", and "vs" are the ones AI tools are most likely to synthesize answers for. If your impressions for these query types are growing, your content is being indexed and considered — even if CTR is low (because the user got their answer from the AI summary).

    Treat GEO as a 90-day project, not a one-week fix. The checklist above takes a few hours to implement; the results accumulate over multiple crawl cycles.
