Matomo's selling point is control: self-hosted, open source, on your infra. The cost of that control is the ongoing job of running it.

Where Matomo falls short
Three reasons teams don't self-host
1. The operational load
A self-hosted analytics server needs upgrades, backups, monitoring, and capacity planning. Every hour spent there is an hour not spent on the product. Managed alternatives remove that line entirely.
2. Aggregates, not individuals
Matomo reports sessions and sources. It can't tell you that one anonymous visitor returned twice, searched, and stalled at pricing. That per-visitor understanding is where growth work happens.
